The 2nd Summer School on Ibadism
The 2nd Summer School on Ibadism will take place on Procida Island (Naples), Scuola di Procida per l’Alta Formazione, University of Naples "L’Orientale" on 8-13 October 2018, as a joint initiative of the University "L’Orientale" of Naples, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the College of Shar‘īa Sciences of the Sultanate of Oman.
The Summer School will focus on:
IBADISM AND MUSLIM IDENTITY IN THE GLOBAL ERA
It will address, in a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective, the following issues:
- Ibadism and globalization
- Ibadism in diaspora – Muslim/ Ibāḍī identity in diaspora
- Re-reading the Ibāḍī sources today
- Contemporary Ibadism especially in Oman and Zanzibar;
- Specifities of Omani and Maghribi Ibadism.
- Eastern and Western Ibadism (how local culture and belonging affected fuqahā’ and their fatwā)
The classes will be divided into a MORNING SESSION (from 9am to 1pm including break/s) and an AFTERNOON SESSION (from 2pm to 6pm including break/s).
9.00 - 10.30 Keynote speech and discussion
10.30 - 11.00 break
11.00 - 13.00 WORKSHOP: after a short introduction by the keynote speaker, students will analyse and discuss readings related to the topic of the keynote speech. Readings will be distributed in advance. Depending on the students’ language knowledge, Arabic texts will be also distributed.
2.00 - 6.00 pm (with a break): Students presentations and discussion
We encourage students to present their own researches. A senior researcher/professor will comment and respond on them.
READINGS: 7-10 readings will be distributed to the students about a month before the Summer School starts. They will include:
- Methodological sources/literature
- Seminal works dealing with the Summer School topics
- Ibāḍī sources/literature
- Heresiographical sources/literature
- Short Arabic texts
REQUIREMENTS: MA and PhD Students from all over the world are encouraged to participate. A background in Islamic studies is welcome.
Number of students: 12-15 students.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: All teaching, course materials and coursework will be in English. Students are required to have at least an intermediate level knowledge of English.
Knowledge of Arabic is welcome.
